Last weekend, I had a little bout of insomnia and ended up officially getting up at 4AM on Saturday morning. Since I was up so early, I thought the best thing for me to do was catch up on television (there are too many good shows this season, including: The New Normal, The Mindy Project, Ben and Kate, starting to watch The New Girl, and getting back to Modern Family, The Office, Parks and Recreation and way too many reality shows) After I watched way too much television, I got up and walked to the flower district on 28th between 6th and 7th. I read an article about it in the NYTimes (see the article here) and have always wanted to go but I’m never up in time to actually walk over there.
The flowers are everywhere – there are lots of vans on the street doing pickups for flower shops and many of the flowers are actually pre-arranged (for weddings, I’m guessing since there were multiples of the same arrangement). I wanted to see the different types of flowers were in season to bring home and brighten up the apartment but to also learn more about flowers since we’re still trying to pick our flowers for the wedding! The street:
One guy was putting together the arrangements on the street:
Every shop had a different specialty – this place had a lot of orchids inside:
The orchids in the flower district are much cheaper than anything you’d buy in the stores (these orchids were about $20 per stem):
One of the larger stores also had the containers for flowers – these are mostly used for weddings and you can buy them by the lot (most lots have 6):
The cold fridge where they stored flowers:
And on my way home with 30 long-stemmed roses (for $10!), I ran into this beautiful white cat guarding his store:
After walking by the flower district, it’s so difficult to justify buying flowers online! The roses are really beautiful and there were enough to have 15 in the bedroom and the rest in our living room!
