Cupcake Cagematch Results: MOISTEST CUPCAKE and PRETTIEST CUPCAKE in NYC!

In case you haven’t had enough of the cupcake cagematch, here are some more reviews for you to digest. By the way, I was listening to something on NPR the other day and found out that people REALLY don’t like the word “moist.” Mark Peters of Good Magazine said that it’s most likely because of the “oi” letters put together, which explains why no one likes the word “ointment.” Anywho…the moistest cupcake in ALL of New York City can be found at:

Tonnie’s Minis! Tonnie’s Mini’s also won the best red velvet cupcake in NYC, which you can read all about right here.

And the prettiest cupcake award goes to:

One Girl Cookies! Here’s a picture of their cupcakes:

Okay, you must concentrate to find these cupcakes. They are behind Sweet Revenge’s cupcakes and come with cool wrapping gadget-y things.

I must say, the judges must’ve been on a sugar high when they determined the prettiest cupcakes, because have you SEEN the works of art they are creating at Cupcake Cafe? I suppose they did come in second place and it was pretty close in the end, but LOOK AT THESE! I almost feel bad eating the beautiful flowers:

And Sweet Revenge probably gets the most creative use of frosting from me:

And the wildcard team kept talking about the technique used at Baked:

And Cupcake Stop does have super cute cupcakes:

The Marvelous Wonderettes Giveaway!

By grace.g.yang · August 13, 2009
Under: Contest,Cupcakes,Desserts,Midtown West,My Life

It seems fitting to do a giveaway for two tickets to the sweet and bubbly show The Marvelous Wonderettes during the cupcake cagematch! I went to see The Marvelous Wonderettes with my mom on Tuesday night and we both LOVED the show:

IMG_5031

The show features songs from the 1950’s and 1960’s; four girls with four very different personalities sing for their high school prom before the intermission and then sing for their 10-year high school reunion after the intermission.

IMG_5037

Betty Jean (green dress, played by Lindsay Mendez) has a ton of school spirit and is a tomboy; Cindy Lou (pink dress, played by Christina Decicco) is Betty Jean’s best friend/prom queen hopeful, and also somewhat of a diva; Missy (orange dress, played by Misty Cotton), is the one that keeps the group together, creates the outfits for the group, and also has a crush on their teacher, Mr. Lee; and Suzy (blue dress, played by Kirsten Bracken), is the slightly ditsy one dating the lights guy. Each of the girls have a high school story and an out-of-high-school-grownup story (with lots of songs connecting both). The show has some great songs, including Lollipop, Mr. Sandman, and It’s in his Kiss.

The Marvelous Wonderettes is a really cute and sweet show and everyone was singing the songs as we were exiting the theater (even the guys!)

So, readers, I’m giving away TWO tickets to The Marvelous Wonderettes (playing at the Westfield Theater)*.

All you have to do is leave your answer in the comments:

What is your favorite dessert item?

I will pick a random winner on Saturday, 8/14, at 10pm! Good luck!

*You must be able to attend a show before August 31st; they perform every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 8pm and on Wednesday’s they also have a performance at 3pm.

Cupcake Cagematch Results: BEST WILDCARD CUPCAKE in NYC!

Initially when I was calling all of the bakeries for cupcake donations, they were very intrigued by the thought of having a “wildcard” entry. What is a wildcard entry, do you wonder? It’s a good and interesting way to distinguish a bakery; it can be a customer favorite, a special flavor that’s only available on certain days, or some kind of cupcake that sets the bakery apart from the others. Bakeries were really excited to show off their wildcard cupcake, and the winner of the best wildcard cupcake in NYC is:

Butter Lane!

Butter Lane won with the best wildcard cupcake (it was a banana cupcake with peanut butter frosting and marshmallows on top) because of the moistness (a full 5/5 from our judges). In fact, a judge wrote that the cupcake was SUPER MOIST (in all caps, too). That must’ve been ONE MOIST CUPCAKE, Butter Lane! The icing texture was smooth, not too thick, but had some meat to it, according to the judges. Everyone loved the presentation (a perfect 5/5) and Andy Brett even gave the cupcake a perfect 5/5 for the overall taste!

Some of my favorite wildcard cupcakes included The Blackout (from Ladybird) and Bird of Paradise from Sweet Revenge. In fact, the blackout was so amazing that I was kind of sad that it didn’t place well with the judges.

Day 3 of our cupcake cagematch results – have you agreed with the results so far? In case you’re joining late, Sweet Revenge won best vanilla cupcake in NYC and Billy’s Bakery won best chocolate cupcake. Today, I’ll reveal the results of the best red velvet cupcake in all of New York (including Westchester!)

The winner of the best red velvet cupcake award goes to:

The judges had some really nice things to say about the bakery; everyone thought the cupcake was very moist (5/5), was bursting with flavor (another 5/5) and the texture was dense and rich. The icing was slightly running (possibly over-aerated), but it had just the right amount of sweetness. The cupcake scored a 4.5/5 in terms of presentation and everyone thought the cupcake was a strong contender for favorite red velvet cupcake.

I spoke with Tonnie when I was organizing the cupcake event and he informed me that he’s opening a new location in Harlem so now you can get the cupcakes if you’re uptown, too!

Andy picked up the cupcakes from Tonnie’s Minis and forgot to take pictures of the bakery, but he’s in the middle of moving, too, so we won’t blame him. Tomorrow, I’ll announce the best wildcard cupcake in all of NYC!
