The Palm

For our end of the week date, Ken and I decided we wanted to get some good red meat: steak! We’ve been visiting a bunch of steakhouses and originally we made plans to visit Peter Lugers, but I only made a reservation at Peter Luger’s because I thought Ken hadn’t been to the Brooklyn restaurant before. When I found out that he had visited, I decided to change our reservations to a restaurant that neither of us had visited before. We decided to visit The Palm in midtown:

Ken and I were watching a show about the best steakhouses in New York and saw The Palm listed on the show so we decided to give the restaurant a chance. Their walls are covered with drawings of different patrons throughout the years:

We were a tad late for our reservation but the server greeted us when we arrived and immediately sat us in a booth by the bar in the back. We started with a bread basket with some onion bread:

We split a salad, the West Gigi version with iceberg lettuce, shrimp, bacon, avocado, eggs, roasted red peppers, green beans, tomatoes and onions:

The salad is also offered at Wolfgang’s Steakhouse but the version at The Palm has avocados! Ken and I recreated the salad at home without avocados and it was actually really easy to make and really delicious!

For our main course, we ordered the New York Strip for two:

The steak is cut tableside (vs. other restaurants where they cut it in the back):

The medium rare steak was a little undercooked because it was such a large cut of meat:

Our sides – mushrooms:

And a baked potato:

The steak was not that flavorful (possibly because it wasn’t doused in butter the way other restaurants do it) and server splashed us with steak juice when he was carving the steak because he dropped a piece of meat, but the crust of the steak was really delicious. I was telling Ken that the last time we went out for steak, I liked the steak the second day (for breakfast) more than when we were eating it at the restaurant! We were pretty full from eating half of the steak and the sides, but were still very tempted by the desserts:

The portions were not for one person – not even for four – they were gigantic quarters of cake (especially the carrot cake!) The table of four next to us ordered the carrot cake and couldn’t even put a dent in the cake even though they definitely looked like they could!

The steak wasn’t great the next morning, although it might have been cooking error on our part. I don’t think I’d return to the restaurant for steak – it’s good, but not amazingly delicious like the other steakhouses I’ve visited recently.
