Initially when I was calling all of the bakeries for cupcake donations, they were very intrigued by the thought of having a “wildcard” entry. What is a wildcard entry, do you wonder? It’s a good and interesting way to distinguish a bakery; it can be a customer favorite, a special flavor that’s only available on certain days, or some kind of cupcake that sets the bakery apart from the others. Bakeries were really excited to show off their wildcard cupcake, and the winner of the best wildcard cupcake in NYC is:

Butter Lane!

Butter Lane won with the best wildcard cupcake (it was a banana cupcake with peanut butter frosting and marshmallows on top) because of the moistness (a full 5/5 from our judges). In fact, a judge wrote that the cupcake was SUPER MOIST (in all caps, too). That must’ve been ONE MOIST CUPCAKE, Butter Lane! The icing texture was smooth, not too thick, but had some meat to it, according to the judges. Everyone loved the presentation (a perfect 5/5) and Andy Brett even gave the cupcake a perfect 5/5 for the overall taste!

Some of my favorite wildcard cupcakes included The Blackout (from Ladybird) and Bird of Paradise from Sweet Revenge. In fact, the blackout was so amazing that I was kind of sad that it didn’t place well with the judges.

Looks delicious! Can I ask what Chikalicious submitted as their wild card cupcake? Their banana cupcake is my fave!

Jessica – not 100% positive because we ate so many cupcakes, but I think we bought a mocha cupcake from Chikalicious. http://www.flickr.com/photos/davidyang/3781502774/

It was actually their caramel cupcake, which was amazing! We asked the guy behind the counter for his recommendation.
